ZTE smartwatch coming Q2 2014, will only work with ZTE smartphones

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Gear smartwatch at this year’s IFA in Berlin, and, despite mixed reviews, the gadget became a trendsetter, even if it came relatively late to the market, compared to other solutions offered by Pebble, for instance. Apple has been long rumored to prepare a smartwatch, just like Google, but other OEMs also want to be part of the game.

The Wall Street Journal quotes Lu Qianhao, head of Shenzhen-based ZTE’s handset marketing strategy, and reports that a ZTE smartwatch could be announced in Q1, and released in the second quarter of next year. Said ZTE smartwatch will offer features similar to those found on higher-end (established) competitors’ solutions, like Samsung, but, at an affordable price. ZTE also plans to initially sell its gadget in exclusively in China, after which to gradually make it available in the US and Europe.

Before you’re getting your hopes up, the ZTE-made smartwatch will only be compatible with ZTE smartphones; however, the company might (or might not) plan on releasing another model which would be compatible with all Android devices.
