And so it has come to this. 5.2-inch smartphones marketed as diminutive flagships. Or, as ZTE puts it in its Axon 7 mini-announcing press release, proof “power, performance and premium experience does not have to lack in a smaller form factor.”

Smaller by just 0.3 inches, mind you, in screen diagonal, 4mm as far as device height goes, another 4 in width, and a “massive” 22 grams less in weight. Not long ago, the ZTE Axon 7 mini would have probably been deemed a giant, but now all of a sudden it’s “pocket-sized.”

Either way, at a recommended retail price of €299 outside the US, the Full HD 5.2-incher looks like a very reasonable purchase for fashionistas, audiophiles and even general Android power users that can make do without a Snapdragon 820 processor or 4GB RAM.

The “full-sized” Axon 7’s winning SoC is downgraded to a still respectable octa-core SD617, you get 3 gigs of RAM, 32 instead of 64GB internal storage, a more than capable 16MP rear-facing camera, the same exact 8MP selfie shooter, as well as “theatre-like” Hi-Fi sound, dual front-fitted stereo speakers, and pre-loaded Marshmallow.

Essentially nothing about the 5.5-incher’s “world-class design” is changed, with a 2.5D curved-edge glass touchscreen and all-metal unibody again employed, while an understandably smaller 2,705mAh battery is said to last 15 hours of continuous talk time. Scheduled for a late September launch in Russia, Germany, Spain, Poland, Japan, Australia, India and Saudi Arabia first, the ZTE Axon 7 mini should eventually arrive stateside too, presumably priced around $300 unlocked.
