It’s hard enough to tell the difference between first-generation ZTE Axon, Axon Pro, Elite and Max editions without a sequel thrown in the mix, but by the looks of things, there’s only one second-gen model decidedly around the corner.

While this is hardly a revolutionary device in terms of design, smoothening the original’s lines out, picking up a circular rear-fitted fingerprint scanner, and replacing the gimmicky 13 + 2MP Dual camera arrangement with a single 20-megapixel shooter, it also touts a major under-the-hood upgrade.

Namely, a Snapdragon 820 SoC with a quad-core Kryo CPU and Adreno 530 GPU that, combined with 4GB RAM and presumably some proprietary software optimizations, was reported to have broken AnTuTu benchmark records in an early pre-release prototype.

The same exact phone, carrying model number A2017, moves one step closer to a formal announcement and commercial launch today, as it receives Tenaa’s regulatory blessing for China use.

The 20 and 8MP cams are further corroborated, as is the 4GB RAM count, and internal storage space stands at a generous 64GB, with microSD support provided for external expansion. Though the same 5.5-inch size as its predecessor, the ZTE Axon 2 manages to squeeze in an ever so slightly larger 3,140 mAh battery, which will come in handy keeping the Quad HD lights on.

By no means a featherweight, the SD820 powerhouse measures 9.8 mm in overall thickness, and tips the scales at 175 grams, yet it looks just as good, if not more elegant than the OG Axon Pro. All that remains to be unveiled is a price tag and release date.
