ZTE CEO talks about 5G, challenges, and the future

By Anton D. Nagy February 11, 2019, 8:00 am

Huawei has been subject to international scrutiny over “national security” concerns that in many cases disqualify the Chinese giant from 5G bids. ZTE, another Chinese giant, is more or less in a similar situation, but the company’s CEO, Ziyang Xu, recently spoke about 5G, hurdles, speedbumps, advancements, and other details regarding the future. Carriers are preparing to roll out 5G services, and manufacturers are preparing to announce 5G-capable smartphones, at the upcoming MWC 2019, and beyond.

While Xu believes ZTE can offer the option to build “simplified networks”, he believes that “5G needs more partners to be involved”. The CEO is betting on worldwide partners, as the company is committed to “building network security and compliance systems, and being a world-class enterprise in this regard, with the joint efforts of global partners”.

In Xu’s vision, the biggest challenge for 5G is finding a business model for service providers, followed by “resource and power consumption”. ZTE has, according to Xu, the leader in 5G standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) tests. The company is willing to work together with carriers worldwide to ease the process of adoption and roll-out of 5G systems.
