Seeing as how the first two Cyanogen OS-powered devices released under Micromax’s Yu sub-brand were christened Yureka and Yuphoria, it’s not surprising in the least to have the Yunique follow in their footsteps.

The problem with this unconventional naming technique is of course the finite number of words starting with U or EU that make sense when associated to a smartphone. For the time being though, Yunique feels like a spot-on description of the super-affordable 4.7-inch Android available exclusively through Snapdeal India.

Priced at a measly equivalent of $75 off-contract (Rs 4,999), the LTE-capable handheld will go on sale September 15 on a flash system akin to the OnePlus One experiments earlier this year. That’s to say the Yu Yunique will only be available every Tuesday, with weekly registrations open until Monday.

It’s a way for Micromax to better control inventory, and possibly avoid big shipping delays, since the cash-strapped masses should go berserk about the 720p display, 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC, 1GB RAM, 8 and 2MP cameras, 2,000 mAh battery, and pre-installed Lollipop software of this budget champion.

Billed as the world’s cheapest 4G LTE device, the Yu Yunique further lets you choose between the stock Android 5.1 experience provided out the box, or a highly customizable Cyanogen OS 12.1 port that you can flash separately with full, official support from both the hardware manufacturer and the software developer.

Other respectable features, considering the crazy low $75 price point, include 8GB internal storage space, a microSD card slot, dual SIM capabilities, and Gorilla Glass 3 screen protection. Such a shame the odds of ever seeing the Yunique on Western store shelves are slim to none.
