Sony Xperia Z4 Compact looks confirmed – so when will it launch?

Sony’s Xperia Z4 just went official, and now we’re already turning our gaze outwards to what’s next. Yesterday we took a look at some model numbers for unreleased Sony handsets, and while we weren’t able to positively identify any, some inferences based on past Xperia device numbering suggested they could include a new Z Ultra-style phablet, maybe the international version of the Z4 itself, and we’ve even heard the suggestion that a Z4 Compact could be represented there. We’re thinking more about that latter model this morning, as an apparent carrier leak seems to confirm Sony’s plans for the model.

The Xperia Z4 Compact pops up on what’s presented as an NTT DoCoMo accessory listing, and while there’s just a placeholder for it here, the name and model number SO-04G sure make it look like Sony intends to launch this guy soon. Sure, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to take the Z4 Compact’s eventual arrival for granted, but it’s nice to see confirmation, all the same.

Last year, the Z3 and Z3 Compact (above) launched at the same time, at IFA. So why didn’t Sony introduce the Z4 Compact at the same time as the Z4 proper? Perhaps it’s waiting for the launch of whatever the international version of the Z4 ends up being – and if that’s the case, rumors suggest Sony could be planning to do so sometime next month.
