Sure, we heard some scattered earlier announcements in the days leading up to Sony’s IFA press event, but when we’re talking about major events from the companies we traveled all that way to see, it was Sony who really got things started for the IFA this year with its Wednesday announcement of the Xperia Z1.

After following development of this handset through all the leaks of codename Honami, we were well curious to finally get a chance to check it out for ourselves. While the Z1 may not go to quite the lengths of the Nokia Lumia 1020, it’s one of the growing number of smartphones placing imaging performance front-and-center; will it live up to the hype, or will new owners of the Z1 be rushing to pick up one of those QX lens cameras to give them an extra edge?

Watch as we go hands-on with Sony’s new flagship, and scroll down even further for a Z1 sample image, to see for yourself what its camera can do.
