Xiaomi to launch a sapphire smartphone before Apple

Sapphire is definitely not new on smartphones, as you might remember Kyocera launch a smartphone sporting a sapphire display a few months ago. Still, you might not remember it as well as you might remember Apple’s failed attempts to bring sapphire to its existing smartphone lineup. If you’re wondering when you’ll be able to get sapphire on your next smartphone, it seems another company is planning to beat Apple.

Xiaomi is now reported to include a 5.7-inch sapphire display in its new Xiaomi 5, which we are expecting to see launched at CES 2015 in the next few weeks. The source claims that the company approached the China-based Lens Technology and Biel Crystal Manufactory about expanding their sapphire processing capacities for the job, and things all seem ready for a possible launch in such a short timeframe.

Sapphire has proven to dramatically improve a smartphone’s durability, and this would definitely help Xiaomi differentiate its next smartphone lineup. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about this.
