Sony acknowledges discussions over possible Windows Phone interest

Sony’s spread at the CES this year – at least the mobile component of it – was heavily Android. That’s pretty much what we went in expecting, but just before the show got underway, we heard some rumors that this exclusive Android focus might not last, and that Sony could be interested in coming out with a smartphone running Windows Phone 8 before the end of the year. While at the time this was just a rumor, some new comments from a Sony Mobile Europe exec appear to support that theory, confirming discussions between Sony and Microsoft.

While some of Sony’s interactions with Microsoft have concerned its PC business, Sony admits exploring its options when it comes to Windows Phone, and in particular, how a Sony Windows Phone might stand out from the Nokia-led pack; the key question for Sony seems to be “what can we deliver on top of it?”

None of this is an assurance that Sony will actually follow through with this idea and come out with a Windows Phone model of its own, let alone release one that arrives this year, but comments like these certainly help to establish such things as real possibilities, rather than unsubstantiated rumors. Anybody up for a super-slim, waterproof WP8 model?
