Microsoft cloud-based gaming could bring full-on Halo to your Windows Phone handset

Microsoft sure is sharing a lot of tantalizing news with its employees today. A little earlier, we heard about word that had leaked of a unified Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 app store in the works. Now another leak has stemmed from these internal meetings, revealing some of Microsoft’s efforts in cloud-based gaming.

The demonstration the company put up reportedly showed Halo 4 running on a number of Windows family devices, including a Windows Phone handset – not just any phone, either, but a lower-end Lumia 520, making things even more impressive. Even in that less-than-ideal situation, the system only experienced a lag of about 45 milliseconds – low enough to make real-time gameplay very workable.

Supposedly, this is all very much in the prototype stages at the moment and hasn’t even been given a name yet; for all we know, it might never actually see the light of day. But if it does, this could be a key part to all the convergence Microsoft seems to be striving for, and might provide a great incentive for gamers already plugged-in to Microsoft’s ecosystem to try out one of its smartphones, as well.
