Microsoft softens its Windows 10 phone upgrade commitment

By Stephen Schenck January 22, 2015, 1:52 pm

Windows 10 is coming to existing Windows Phone models, right? At least, the initial word from Microsoft was that “all Lumia Windows Phone 8” models would get Windows 10 updates. And then at yesterday’s event, Microsoft pushed beyond that Lumia limitation and clarified that Windows Phone 8.1 models in general – presumably including those from other OEMs – will be upgrading to Windows 10. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, we’re not out of the woods just yet, and in a new blog post published overnight, Microsoft pencils-in a few asterisks next to those update guarantees.

Microsoft exec Chris Weber now says that while the company’s goal is to see “the majority of the Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 and 8.1” get updates, he stops short of committing to 100 percent coverage. We could also find ourselves looking at a situation where lesser-equipped hardware is given a bare-bones version of Windows 10; Weber admits that “not every phone will upgrade or support all possible Windows 10 features, and certain features and experiences will require more advanced future hardware.”

While that sounds like a more realistic commitment than saying everyone’s getting full-blown Windows 10, it also puts current Lumia users in a frustrating situation, not knowing to what extent their current hardware may or may not be supported. While Microsoft has mentioned a handful of Lumia models that are definitely on-tap for updates, it hasn’t even approached anything like an exhaustive list of its intentions for the whole of the sprawling Lumia lineup.
