Windows 10 Mobile fans, meet the super-slim, water-resistant W5.5 Pro

By Adrian Diaconescu February 3, 2016, 5:17 am

Is the pocket-friendly version of Microsoft’s super-successful Windows desktop OS dead? Well, it’s definitely struggling in terms of both mainstream adoption and general system stability, but as Redmond reportedly considers killing off the Lumia brand, more and more third-party device manufacturers join the seemingly sinking ship, which is a relatively good sign.

Some of these OEMs are industry veterans or at least promising up-and-comers, including Xiaomi, Acer and Alcatel OneTouch, while others, like NuAns or Funker, don’t even appear to be household names of their domestic smartphone businesses.

Still, MS needs all the help it can get in its quest for mobile platform duopoly contention, so if it sells a few hundred units in Spain, the just-unveiled W5.5 Pro is welcome in the W10M family. Produced by local outfit Funker (with an “n”), the mid-ranger aims to stand out with a no-bells-and-whistles anorexic design and water protection, a feature not routinely found on Windows phones.

Tipping the scales at a measly 135 grams, the 5.5-incher measures 6.9mm in thickness and is almost all 720p JDI screen, but unfortunately, packs an equally skinny 2,600 mAh battery. Then again, the display is obviously fairly frugal, and so is the quad-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 processor, while 2GB RAM should efficiently handle all your multitasking requirements.

The rest of the features aren’t half bad either, from expandable 16GB storage space to 13 and 5MP cameras, as well as 4G LTE connectivity and, of course, pre-loaded Windows 10 Mobile goodies. But perhaps the W5.5 Pro needed a lower price tag than €240 ($260) to truly shine.
