Will Apple iPhone 5 Get OmniVision’s 12.6MP Camera?

If you’re an Apple fan and are looking forward to the next iPhone then you probably heard of Sony’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer’s statement that the company’s best sensor technology will go to Apple. Analysts drew the conclusion that it’s about the iPhone 5 and the eight-megapixel Sony camera.

Just in case they are wrong, OmniVision, the company behind the Apple iPhone 4 camera, is reportedly producing new cameras for upcoming smartphones. One of these new cameras is the OV12825 12 Megapixel (4224 x 3000) Image Sensor with OmniBSI Technology. This baby is capable of recording 1080p video at 60fps, with productions starting in June.

The story is very simple: Apple may or may not choose Sony’s (or OmniVision’s) sensor for the next generation iPhone. Either way, Sony’s eight-megapixel (hopefully with backlit Exmor-R sensor) or OmniVision’s new sensor, the iPhone 5 will definitely have a great camera, even if we just only judge by the camera on the iPhone 4. What are your thoughts?
