Verizon to Launch New Xooms as DROID Xyboard 8.2, 10.1
We’ve seen pretty compelling evidence that the recently-revealed Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Editon tablets will be sold by Verizon under the names Droid Xyboard 10.1 and Droid Xyboard 8.2, respectively. We actually didn’t believe that Verizon would go with such odd-sounding brandings, but sure enough, the carrier applied for trademark protection on “Xyboard” last month. Also, it seems that Samsung is not the only company keen on differentiating its tablets by appending screen sizes to their names.
So far the 1.2GHz, dual-core Honeycomb 3.2 tablets have only been confirmed for the UK and Ireland, but it should be no surprise that they’ll be arriving stateside on VZW, as that was Motorola’s launch partner for the first Xoom (which had been slated for release as the Droid Xoom before losing the “Droid” for unknown reasons). No word yet on when the Xyboards, which will almost surely be LTE-capable and possibly Ice Cream Sandwich-powered in their US iterations, are set to launch.
