US Mobile needs to certify its Xiaomi and Meizu phones before continuing sales
In the past 48 hours, we’ve seen how badly a publicized distribution deal ended up working out for US Mobile. It announced that was selling Xiaomi and Meizu devices for use in the US and was rebuffed by media outlets and the former of the device manufacturers. Today, the T-Mobile virtual operator went looking for vindication in a blog post.
It turns out that the MVNO was offering something up no other a la carte marketplace could: in-house warranty and support. Instead of dealing with the manufacturer, US Mobile would be using its own resources to repair the phones— given that CEO Ahmed Khattak is also the founder of one of the bigger foreign smartphone marketplaces GSM Nation, we think that the carrier would have been able to build a support backbone if not use the one GSM Nation already has.
The stumbling block that has stopped device sales, though, was one from T-Mobile and the networks it has roaming agreements with — which US Mobile is calling “enabling carriers.” The thing is, since US Mobile is offering wireless service and is selling products completely foreign to the MVNO’s enabling carriers on its front-end, those products should go through tests and certification processes from the enabling carriers.
“If US Mobile were purely a contract free phone seller, the phones would still be in our catalog,” the blog post said.
US Mobile hopes to push the Xiaomi Redmi 2, Mi 3, Mi 4 and the Meizu M2 Note through those certification processes and get sales going again soon — a process that usually takes weeks, sometimes months.
