Here’s how US carriers are dealing with the Galaxy Note 7 recall
Nearly every Galaxy Note 7 has been recalled by Samsung due to the risk of exploding batteries, but how the returns are to be handled will be up to points of sales. In the US, three of the four major carriers have issued press releases regarding the issue. Verizon also has notified customers through an update to its description on the Note 7’s product page, now buried in its online smartphone showcase.
AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon have stopped selling the Galaxy Note 7 at the request of Samsung.
AT&T is encouraging customers to exchange their Note 7 units for a Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7 active, or any other Samsung phone for a $25 bill credit. Customers can opt for another brand’s smartphone. Note 7 accessories can also be returned. Ma Bell will allow customers to exchange those phones for a presumably safer Note 7 in the future. Those who hold on to their recalled device until that time can make a direct exchange for that new device.
Sprint is also offering a future direct exchange. The second option is an immediate exchange for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge with a replacement of accessories bought for the Note 7 and a reimbursement of the price difference between devices. Samsung will directly offer a $25 gift card for the above options, but customers can also switch their Note 7 out for any other Sprint device and get a difference reimbursement and any associated stocking and shipping fees waived. The company is urging customers to head to a retail outlet for assistance.
As far as T-Mobile is concerned, it is accepting returns for a full refund of the device and accessories. Customers won’t pay any stocking or shipping fees. The Un-carrier has explicitly told them that they can still keep their free year of Netflix as well as the Gear Fit 2 or SD card perk if they pre-ordered the device. The carrier is not offering immediate device exchanges and is only offering future Note 7 to Note 7 exchanges.
Through September 30, Verizon is waiving restocking fees for customers returning or exchanging their Note 7 devices. Terms on those returns and exchanges are not disclosed.
