Twitter is now a News app on the App Store

Twitter hasn’t been making enough money for investors. It has struggled to grow its userbase over the past few years, stuck at a rate of a few million per quarter, with gimmick after gimmick to improve the experience. But one of its big strengths has been to deliver and propagate breaking news minutia. The company seems to have realized this and has decided to migrate its app over from the Social Networking category in the iOS App Store to the News category.

It doesn’t compete with Facebook, Snapchat and Tinder anymore, but it tops its new home being right ahead of Reddit and CNN Politics. Top billing affects its visibility and could improve the app’s “Overall” ranking — on the free apps chart, Twitter stands at #28. App intelligence firm Sensor Tower says it can keep its number one spot in News for a time yet while it was stuck at fifth in the Social Networking category.

No switches were made with the Google Play app entry.
