My Microsoft Surface RT tablet and my Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone run software that looks alike, but each Windows device barely knows the other exists. Read on to see why I think this is wrong.
The last half-a-year has been a very uncertain time for users of webOS devices. Optimism for the Pre 3 was quickly derailed by HP’s announcement of its intent to cease further production of webOS hardware. That started-off a very tense time for users who had invested in the platform, but as the year wrapped-up, we learned of HP’s plans to make the platform open source, giving us hope that there may still be life for it, yet. Throughout all of this, HP has tried to stand-by its existing user base and show what support it could through the release of system updates. We heard [...]
$1.2 billion was the amount HP spent on acquiring Palm, together with webOS, back in April 2010 and allegedly it’s the same amount the company asked for when it tried to sell before killing webOS and turning it open source.
According to Paul Mercer, former senior director of software at Palm, there was little hope for webOS from the very beginning. “Palm was ahead of its time in trying to build a phone software platform using Web technology, and we just weren’t able to execute such an ambitious and breakthrough design”, he added, before saying that [...]
Despite what HP has done to webOS in the past month, those of you out there rocking an HP Pre3 will be lucky to find out that there is an update rolling out to your devices over-the-air.
The new webOS 2.2.4 refresh weighs anywhere between 29MB to 9MB, depending on whether your phone is on AT&T, Verizon or in Europe. So what’s in the package? A “variety of software improvements”, as described by HP themselves, meaning the refresh will likely fix a couple of issues users were having; it’s a general bugfix release but nonetheless welcome.
The HP Pre 3 is the best (and perhaps last) webOS smartphone to ever go on sale. It has a fast 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm CPU with 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage space, a 1230mAh battery, plus a 5MP camera on back with LED flash.
Overall the design of the Pre 3 seems dated, and the specs certainly are not up to par with what can be find in high end Android hardware. It’s a shame that over six months have passed between the announcement and the release of the Pre 3; had that window have been smaller, the Pre 3 would be met with warmer reception.
The smartphone is [...]
After HP’s move to abandon webOS, it is just normal to fear that current phones will be left without support but the manufacturer is proving it wrong as we speak. The recently available HP Pre 3, which we unboxed, has received an over-the-air update.
The system refresh bumps version numbers of webOS to 2.2.0 build 3171 but other than that, it’s not quite certain what exactly has been changed. According to reports, the built-in help is working and there appear to be some improvements to the e-mail section. If you’ve got the update and installed, let us know what [...]
While not slated for official release in the US, the HP Pre 3 is still on sale (and prices are getting lower each day), even after HP’s announcement that they’d no longer be selling webOS hardware. That said, the Pre 3 represents the best in terms of webOS hardware, which is an exciting prospect. It packs a WVGA 3.6″ display, a single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a rear-facing 5MP camera with flash. It’s running on webOS 2.2, and HP promises future updates to keep Pre 3 owners happy. This particular model, which you can buy from Clove [...]
It’s hardly surprising that, following HP’s news last week that it would discontinue manufacturing webOS hardware, plenty of folks started reacting like rats on a sinking ship; we just saw retailers over the weekend price down TouchPad tablets to the point where they were practically giving them away. While there’s a good chance we’ll never see another webOS smartphone or tablet, there’s still some future left for the platform, with the company announcing its intent to continue supporting webOS smartphones with software updates, to give the Pre 3 a limited [...]
HP’s never had it easy when it comes to webOS, purchased when it acquired Palm last year. Both Palm’s earlier webOS devices, and those since released by HP, have struggled to find their niche in a heavily-saturated smartphone marketplace. Lately, though, things have been looking a little up, with the Pre 3 quietly launching in Europe, and a recent poll showing customer tablet preference for the TouchPad as second only to the iPad. Whatever momentum may have been building is now shot, with the company revealing today that it plans to cease development of webOS tablets and [...]
Today’s news from HP marks what looks like the end of an era, with the company deciding to throw in the towel on webOS-based smartphones. The platform has only been around for about a couple years, starting with rumors of something called “Nova” that Palm was working on. We got a proper name for the project with Palm announcing webOS and the Palm Pre at CES 2009.
By summer, Palm had launched the original Pre QWERTY slider. The Pixi gave users an option with a non-slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Early 2010 brought news of upgrades to the Palm and Pixi, both [...]
Ever since HP acquired Palm, the company has been struggling to make webOS smartphones work; will the Pre 3 finally be the device to capture the public’s eye? We should find out shortly, thanks to the phone unexpectedly launching in Europe.
Earlier this week we saw the European Pre 3 made available for pre-order, and were expecting it to be another couple weeks before the handset actually started shipping out to customers. Since then, though, HP has updated its online store to reflect that the smartphone is presently available, shipping in 1-2 days. Retail partners have [...]
Well if it wasn’t enough to find the HP Pre 3 finally making the news again yesterday as it popped up on the Orange UK Support site, this time there’s more. We’ve come across some interesting news where we find HP Germany offering an unlocked version of the Pre 3 for pre-order, and this could finally mean the wait is over.
Surely we’ve had a lot of manufacturers promise release dates and then they end up being unable to deliver, but we’ll actually wait for this rumor this one last time. The only sad part of this whole report is that all pre-orders [...]
Its been so long since HP Announced their future Pre 3, that I bet people already think it was launched and nobody cared. After the TouchPad and Veer flopped, it could’ve seemed obvious, but as it stands, it’s still delayed, and possibly destined to make its initial debut in the UK. The Orange UK support site was recently updated to show some love for the device, so as long as they don’t end up pulling the page, we can bet it’ll be launched some time this month.
The device is currently being offered under the already know specs that include 512MB of RAM, [...]
Where, oh where, is HP’s Pre 3? The company revealed the smartphone all the way back in February. While the HP Veer has come to market since then, the Pre 3 remains elusive. Pre-orders have been open for the smartphone’s European launch, and though we last expected them to start shipping in mid-July, that did not come to pass. While we’re still not sure exactly when the Pre 3 will become available, at least we now have a windows more specific than “summer”, with an HP exec revealing the smartphone will make its retail debut in Europe this [...]
A few days ago Brandon postulated that HP’s Web OS would die unless they license WebOS and let third party manufacturers begin making devices based on the OS, much like Google does with Android.
The Pre3 is just around the corner and should be sporting a higher resolution screen, faster processor, and all around improvements. Brandon feels the “problem” with WebOS is that it is being made by one company who is also making one smartphone at a time — with new hardware coming out every six or more months. That’s all true.
Android and Windows [...]
Hewlett Packard’s Pre 3 is nearly upon us, with US sales anticipated to begin later in July, and HP accepting pre-orders for the smartphone in Europe, shipping soon. Is it too late, though, for a little hardware revision? A page on HP’s site suggests that the Pre 3 may be in store for a new processor.
We’ve been expecting the Pre 3 to run a single-core 1.4GHz chip, but a specs page for the Pre 3 in the UK is showing the smartphone running a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon. Could we be looking at regional differences in how the smartphone is configured, possibly [...]
While the HP Pre 3 is on pre-order in Europe and shipping mid-July it should also be making its entrance on the U.S. market sometime this month. According to recent rumors though, it appears that it will not come to Sprint!
According to an un-named source, the HP Pre 3 is not coming to Sprint at all and, for what it’s worth, there are no planned future HP devices headed to the carrier yet. There’s no information on which of the two parties took the final decision — or whether it was a mutual consent — but HP didn’t see the sales numbers it expected [...]
Earlier this year, it was looking as if Europe would have its hands on HP’s Pre 3 by now, with pre-orders for the smartphone open since May, in preparation for a late June launch. With June come and gone, when will the Pre 3 finally materialize? HP has since added Pre 3 pre-orders to its own website (our prior experience with them was through Amazon), taking orders for the webOS handset with plans to start shipping in a couple weeks.
HP’s direct pricing for the Pre 3 matches what we saw with Amazon, costing you the equivalent of about $640. The company marks the [...]
Fans of webOS may have the diminutive Veer to help tide them over, but for many of them, the Pre 3 is the model they’ve really been looking forward to. We’ve been following the phone’s progress towards its release, putting in appearances at the FCC with both CDMA and GSM versions. Some new information from a couple sources now places the smartphone’s release in late July, as well as reveals the Pre 3 will have Skype integration, including video chat via its front-facing camera.
The only carrier whose rumored release has a date attached to it is Verizon, [...]
The HP Palm Pre 3 for Verizon has recently passed FCC and the AT&T application tipped a webOS 2.3 feature but this time it’s one more time for the Pre 3 to visit FCC.
It seems like a European GSM version of the HP Pre 3 visited FCC and got certified. So there we have everything that matters covered, AT&T, Verizon and European bands all passing FCC. Now all we need is the smartphone itself but if you just can’t wait for the Pre 3, take a look at the tiny Veer 4G if you’re on AT&T. We’ve got the unboxing, hardware and software tour ready with [...]
The upcoming HP Pre 3 will feature a front-facing camera when it finally arrives this summer (hitting Europe in late June), bringing with it the opportunity to place some video calls with webOS. HP’s a bit late to the game on that one, but it could be looking to distinguish itself by offering some innovations to how we use videoconference software, revealed in a paper the company’s recently published.
First up, HP tackles the problem of properly framing your outgoing video feed. Instead of taking up screen space by showing a thumbnail view of your own face, the [...]
While HP’s webOS-powered Veer has just arrived in the States, it’s beefier big brother, the Pre 3, is taking its good old time. We’ve seen what looks like both an AT&T and a Verizon-equipped Pre 3 get their FCC certifications, but haven’t heard just when the smartphone might go up for sale. HP’s site for the Pre 3 says that there’s “planned availability this summer”, but just when and where? The first signs of upcoming Pre 3 sales have surfaced, with the German version of Amazon now accepting pre-orders for the smartphone.
We know that webOS users wanted to be able to do some editing for the documents up on Google Docs right from the web without any other applications involved and it looks like your prayers have been answered!
If you are running an HP Palm smartphone with really any version of webOS — webOS 1.4.5 confirmed — you are now able to do the editing online, on the web, for both documents and spreadsheets. You might see some missing features (cloud printing) or some features not working as they should but the glitches will hopefully be ironed out soon. You still need to get [...]
