HTC’s Sensation-series Androids were the first of its phones to start receiving updates to Ice Cream Sandwich. Once the white Sensation made its retail debut, already loaded with ICS, we saw the update start going out to existing Sensations. Of course, things always tend to take a little longer once the carriers get involved, and this was no exception. By the end of March, we had still yet to see the update hit T-Mobile subscribers with the Sensation 4G, though the company did speak up and confirm that the update would eventually be on its way. We haven’t heard anything new about plans for the Sensation 4G since then, but the update’s absence has apparently been busy fueling some rumors about just what’s taking so long. Today, T-Mobile addressed these concerns, as well as provided some new information on just when the update might arrive.

Some Sensation 4G users had started accusing T-Mobile of not wanting to offer subscribers free upgrades to ICS too soon in the hopes of driving One S sales. In a support thread for the phone, a T-Mobile representative vigorously rejects that theory, going so far as to say that ICS isn’t enough of a change relative to Gingerbread to be that strong of a motivation for buyers.

Ultimately, T-Mobile explains the wait for the update the same as every carrier seems to for every update that isn’t here right when we’d like: it needs to be thoroughly tested first. While there’s still no ETA, we do at least get some news concerning when the Sensation 4G ICS update won’t be arriving, and it now looks like May at the absolute earliest.
