If you’ve been following our Microsoft Surface Pro coverage, you’re already well aware of one of the otherwise impressive tablet’s major shortcomings: despite having a pressure-sensitive stylus, the API Microsoft decided to support isn’t compatible with software like Photoshop – exactly the sort of programs many users probably thought would be most useful on a device like this. Luckily, it looks like the needed drivers could be just about to arrive.

We’ve been waiting for these for months – we heard back in early February that they could be here “soon,” but clearly that didn’t come to pass. Today, Microsoft’s Panos Panay tweeted that he was testing beta drivers and the long-awaited pressure sensitivity for Photoshop would soon be a reality.

In fact, it may already be here, as there’s new driver available from Wacom, dated today, up on the company’s website. There hasn’t yet been confirmation that this is indeed what Panay was talking about, but even if it’s not, the needed drivers should land shortly.

If you do have the opportunity, go to Wacom’s download page and try installing the “TABLET PC – Enhanced Tablet Driver 7.1.1-12” dated May 9 and let us know your results.

Update: It looks like that’s confirmed: the new driver works. Check it out through the Wacom link above (don’t look for Surface in the model list – you want Tablet PC) and get sketching on your Surface Pro!
