Surface Pro 2 receives upgraded processor

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2 was one of the best tablets of 2013. Not only were we impressed by what we saw, but you readers voted it your third favorite tablet of the year, bested only by the Nexus 7 and iPad Air. Out of the gate, it was already a solid performer, running an Intel Core i5 Haswell at 1.6GHz. By now the tablet is less than three months old, yet Microsoft is already taking revisiting its design choices, upgrading that chip to a newer, faster component.

Instead of the 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U that initially powered the Surface Pro 2, Microsoft is transitioning the tablet to a 1.9GHz Core i5-4300U. Other than the CPU clock speed bump, the changes seem minor – the GPU is also capable of slightly higher speeds (though not by much), and the new chip supports additional security standards.

While Microsoft has confirmed that this switch is taking place, it hasn’t offered a specific rationale for the move, beyond a general “sometimes we change components” statement.

We can’t imagine it would be anything close to a night-and-day difference, but we’d still love to put one of these new Surface models head-to-head against the initial Pro 2 design and see just how they compare when it comes to performance.
