Microsoft's Smart Covers for its Surface Tablets, the Touch Cover and Type Cover, are definitely iconic components of the tablet's design, and anyone who's anyone is picking one up alongside their Surface purchase. Unfortunately, these covers also seem to be a source of problems for Microsoft, as we reported yesterday upon learning of problems with unintended audio muting. That's not the only glitch with these covers, as it turns out, and today we get word that some of them are simply peeling apart at their seams.

This time, we're focusing on the Touch Cover. Users have been noticing that some of the cover's flexible elements, rather than bending unharmed, are starting to open up and split. One user who spoke to an employee at a Microsoft store says he was told that this is far from an infrequent occurrence, and that store had seen at least two similar returns.

Affected users have got to be pretty upset, even if Microsoft is being good about accepting exchanges, as this is not the sort of quality construction you expect from a $100 accessory.

Have any of you new Surface owners noticed this same kind of damage on your own tablet? Did Microsoft give you any hassle in swapping your keyboard out for a new one?
