Last year’s Surface 2 was a solid improvement over the first-gen tablet, keeping the same kickstand design but making a number of internal upgrades, like moving to a Tegra 4 SoC and a 1080p display. Back when it was introduced, we knew to also expect an LTE-enabled version of the tablet eventually, with a release planned for sometime this year. About a week ago we started picking up the scent of just that LTE model, and then heard a little about what Microsoft might be planning on charging for the tablet. Today the company goes official with the LTE Surface 2, revealing that sales are just about to start.

As of tomorrow, March 18, shoppers in the US will be able to pick up a Surface 2 with support for AT&T’s LTE network at a Microsoft store, Best Buy, or either of the companies’ online presences.

Pricing is a perfect match for what we saw rumored last week, with the 64GB LTE Surface 2 selling for just about $680 – that compares to $550 for the WiFi-only 64GB Surface 2.

Despite this 4G-connected version of the Surface 2 hitting stores this week, there’s still no sign of any indication from Microsoft that it’s considering delivering a similarly equipped LTE version of the higher-end Surface Pro 2.
