The Surface running Windows RT is available for purchase by all those that want to experience Microsoft’s latest operating system on a tablet (powered by an ARM processor, since this particular OS is tailored for the slower processors). We haven’t seen official numbers regarding the sales but CEO Steve Ballmer hints that they are “modest”.

After the CEO said he expected Windows Phone 8 volumes to “ramp up quickly” Steve Ballmer told Le Parisien that Surface sales have been off to a “modest” start, without further specifics. However, Steve Ballmer took this opportunity to talk about a “higher-end” version of the product (Surface Pro running Windows 8) packing a higher-resolution screen and powered by a new Intel processor.

Update: We’ve been contacted by Microsoft regarding the above. Here’s their official statement.

When asked about Surface, Steve’s use of the term “modest” was in relation to the company’s approach in ramping up supply and distribution of Surface with Windows RT, which has only been available via our online store and certain Microsoft retail stores in the U.S.  While our approach has been modest, Steve notes the reception to the device has been “fantastic” which is why he also stated that “soon, it will be available in more countries and in more stores.

Update 2: The online version of the article in the source link below has been modified. References to Steve Ballmer allegedly talking about “modest” sales for the Surface have been removed. The CEO was reportedly talking about “modest” supply and not demand or sales, as Microsoft’s statement above claims. Apparently, there’s nothing to see here, folks. Or is it? Nasdaq and many other media outlets are still reporting on the news, as we did above, in the vein of “modest” sales (though citing Le Parisien, as we did). What Steve Ballmer said is no longer clear and we’ll just have to wait for official financial figures to see unit sale numbers.
