Sprint Sets Release Date, Price For Motorola Photon 4G

Last week, we saw Motorola’s Photon 4G on Sprint WiMAX get its FCC certification, a month after the smartphone was first announced. That set us up to expect the phone’s release in the coming weeks, and sure enough, Sprint has finally announced the Photon’s launch details, coming out on July 31 for about $200 on-contract.

Like other recent Sprint launches, subscribers who qualify for the carrier’s Sprint Premier program, by being a long-term customer or meeting certain monthly spending goals, will have the opportunity to order the Photon 4G a few days in advance, able to purchase the smartphone as of July 28. Again, this is a nice treat, but come on Sprint, a three day head start won’t buy anyone much in the way of bragging rights; make it a week, and we’ll talk.

The Photon 4G has dual 1GHz processing cores, a full gigabyte of RAM, a 4.3-inch qHD display, eight-megapixel main camera (plus a VGA front-facer), and 16GB of internal flash storage. It will dock with Webtop compatible accessories, and has a GSM radio for global roaming. Of course, when you’re on Sprint’s network, the Photon 4G will use WiMAX for the fastest available data connection.
