Sony announces Xperia M2 Aqua, a waterproof midranger “for everyone”

Need a midrange smartphone that’s also waterproof? You’re in luck, as Sony has just gone official with the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua, “the waterproof smartphone for everyone.”

The M2 Aqua brings Sony’s signature OmniBalance glass design to the midrange phone sector, offering the highest waterproofing rating in a smartphone as well (IP65/68). The M2 Aqua is meant to build upon the success of the original M2, so no matter what the conditions are like outside, you can use your phone and enjoy.

Let’s now talk specs. There’s a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, and 4G LTE capabilities are inbuilt. A 2,300 mAh non-removable battery — which Sony calls the highest-capacity in this class of smartphone — is also a part of the hardware package, and there’s also an 8MP rear-facing camera (with a bunch of Xperia-trademark hardware and software features to help you get the best shot possible).

The display is where things start looking kind of drab, as this is a qHD panel (that’s quarter, not quad) on a 4.8-inch display. People shopping in this range of smartphone seemingly aren’t all that interested in pixel density, though, so we’re not sure if that’ll be a legitimate issue in practice.

Sony’s press release does not mention pricing or availability details. Anyone looking to pick one of these suckers up?
