So far this year, Sony’s introduced us to plenty of new hardware, including the Xperia Z2, the Z1 Compact, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet; that’s all well and good, but what’s cooking over on the software side of things? Sony’s been working at updates for a number of its Android models, and today announces the start to distribution of KitKat updates for the Z1, Z1 Compact, and Z Ultra.

Android 4.4 is on its way to all three of those handsets beginning today, but expect the usual regional delays as carriers get involved. You can look forward to a UI refresh, tweaks to Quick Settings and the status bar, and updated Sony apps. There’s also new support for those Xperia Themes we looked at the other week, bringing an assortment of custom skins for you to choose from.

Remember when we checked out that Xperia Z2 and Z1 camera comparison, where the Z2 seemed to do so much better than the Z1 despite packing the same sort of camera hardware? We wondered if Sony might be working on an update to enhance the Z1’s performance, and sure enough, the release notes for these updates mention an “updated Camera application and overall tuning to improve the camera experience.” We still want to examine just how substantial the improvements may be for ourselves, but this sounds like great news, all the same.

Following these updates, look for KitKat to come to the Xperia Z, ZL, Tablet Z, and ZR sometime starting around May.
