What company comes to mind when you’re thinking “smartwatch innovator?” Pebble? Samsung? They may be a couple of the highest-profile players, sure, but it’s easy to forget about some of the smartphone makers who tried dipping their toe in this pool even earlier – companies like Motorola with its MOTOACTV in 2011, or Sony (then Sony Ericsson) with its LiveView all the way back in 2010. Since then, Sony’s released some updated models, including last year’s SmartWatch 2 (above). The wearables market has grown by leaps and bounds since last summer, and now we hear that Sony could nearly be ready to deliver its SmartWatch 3, tipped for an IFA 2014 launch.

And from what this source shares, the SW3 could resist the currently turning tide and not be an Android Wear model, continuing in the footsteps of the SW2, instead. The hardware could end up giving us things like a low-power transflective LCD, great for use outdoors. The SW3 could also stand out from a communications standpoint, and while it wouldn’t sport its own cellular radio, it might be WiFi-capable, still letting it connect to the internet independently of a smartphone.

Finally, we’re told that the Sony SmartWatch 3 would be waterproof, dust resistant, and could support wireless charging, just like the Moto 360. Unlike the Motorola Android Wear device, though, the SW3 would be a more traditional square design.

Not being an Android Wear model could be a risky move for an Android-focused smartwatch at this point in time, so we’ll be curious to see what sort of reception this model gets if it does, in fact, debut at IFA as foretold.
