Sony set on mobile games with PlayStation franchises in 2018

Update: CNBC is reporting that the releases will be both for Android and iOS.

Sony does not seem to be chasing Nintendo in the maddening march to mobile gaming. As the latter seems to be diving head-first into all major platforms with more of its intellectual property, the company behind the PlayStation (and, more relevantly, the PlayStation VR) is said to have plans for mobile gaming.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that Sony will release five smartphone games focused around PlayStation franchises around the end of March in 2018. Some games will be older, existing titles that can’t be played with the latest hardware. These games can apparently link to current consoles, though. We’ll hear about these games by the end of the year. Sony’s ForwardWorks will distribute the games. Sony has yet been able to comment to Reuters on the news.

Availability is not clear at this point, but with a year and a half to go, we’ll figure it out along the way.
