Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 ‘Anzu’ Previewed

Consummate hardware leaker Eldar Murtazin has published a full hands-on of a pre-production Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 “Anzu,” despite the phone’s having yet to be announced. Its specs will apparently be somewhat similar to what we’d already heard — 800MHz MSM7230 processor, FWVGA resolution, 720p video capture — but also differ in screen size (4.3 inches, not 4.2), OS version (Android 2.3 Gingerbread will apparently only be an upgrade, as the device will supposedly ship with 2.2 Froyo), and camera resolution (12 megapixels, not 8.1). Since Murtazin’s unit only ran Android 2.1 Eclair with no UI enhancements — and since the camera software only allowed three-megapixel stills and 288 x 352 CIF video — it was inappropriate to judge the performance of a retail-ready model; still, this X10 upgrade was judged to offer a less-than-impressive feature set, compared to other flagship phones that will probably be released during the same time period.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 offers a 1GHz Snapdragon processor (actually less powerful and capable of overclocking than the MSM7230) and capacious four-inch display, but received some criticism for shipping with the outdated Android 1.6 Donut and lacking multi-touch out of the box. In general, Sony Ericsson has received somewhat of a reputation for releasing products late, underpowered, and/or unpolished — despite many of the handsets’ attractive aesthetics and high aspirations.
