Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 has rapidly become the go-to chip for this generation of high-end Androids, and with the HTC First, we’ve also seen the Snapdragon 400 hit the scene. Those are both some fine SoCs, but we’ve really been salivating at the chance to see the even higher-performance Snapdragon 800 show up in some devices, after getting a chance to play with an 800-powered tablet at the CES. While we’ve still got a little bit of a wait to go, the 800’s arrival is just starting to crest over the horizon, with word that mass production of the chip is set to get underway next month.

Between Krait 400 cores and a new Adreno 330 GPU, the 800 is shaping up to be the chip we’ll see at the heart of the next round of flagships. With production getting up to speed in late May, we might hope to learn about some of the first such models at the IFA this summer – that is, if they don’t arrive even sooner. It’s not unthinkable that we could see an Android running a Snapdragon 800 sometime by mid-August.

Are you excited about the arrival of the 800, or do you think NVIDIA and the Tegra 4 might just become the underdogs that end up winning our hearts?
