If you still use Hangouts for general messaging purposes, you’re not going to be able to keep on texting with it soon enough.

Even while the app’s still going to be here “as it is,” there’s continuous slippage towards an enterprise bifurcation that’s going to hit you right in the face with Chats and Meet. Oh yeah, there was also that thing about Google Messenger turning into Android Messages to serve SMS and RCS purposes. And since the app’s going the way of the Duo-uh, we mean dodo, you can’t honestly be surprised here.

First, it was the merged SMS-Hangouts threads. Google’s now said to be doing away with SMS on Hangouts altogether, according to an email to G Suite administrators obtained by Android Police. Users will reportedly see a message headed by the words “SMS is moving out of Hangouts” starting March 27 and the actual departure will take place on May 22.

Google Voice users who use Hangouts for SMS will not be affected. Project Fi users, who can’t use Google Voice, may also not be affected if Hangouts is their default.
