For all the progress that’s been made over the years towards slimming down the bezel surrounding smartphone screens – the gap between the display and the phone’s edge, we still haven’t seen anything that quite looks like an all-screen phone face. Sometimes manufacturers come close, especially on a phone’s side edges, but up top and down below we’re generally still left with expanses of open space. Maybe we won’t be for long, though, as LG has just demonstrated a smartphone screen with some stunningly thin bezels, reportedly just one millimeter wide.

The device above was shown off at the Society for Information Display convention, fabricated using a TFT oxide process. While the screen dominates the face of that demo unit, keep in mind that this isn’t any actual smartphone model in line for production. After all, a commercial handset would have a number of questions to answer: in a layout like this, where do you put the earpiece, the proximity sensor, the front-facing camera?

This demo is also not very bright, outputting 250 nits (compare that to closer to the 500 range on production phones). While there’s clearly still work to be done here, how much would you love to someday have a phone that looks like the one above?
