NVIDIA bringing GameStream to Shield later this month

While not too many OEMs flocked to the Tegra 4 this year, NVIDIA made the best of a bad situation by releasing some hardware of its own, bringing us the Shield Android portable gaming console this past summer. While that lets you play Android games with the benefit of real hardware controls, that’s only been one part of Shield’s allure: you could also use the device to play full PC games, streamed over WiFi with the help of your GeForce GTX graphics card. While that feature’s been available, NVIDIA’s kept it under beta. Well, it’s finally about time for it to go official, and the company announced today its intent to kick-off GameStream for real on October 28.

If you’ve been following the beta, this official launch will bring some improvements to the experience you’re used to, offering smoother graphics, better WiFi support, and a tweaked UI. GameStream will support something like fifty games at first, and eventually work with NVIDIA’s GRID cloud-based gaming service.

There’s also a Shield “console mode” on the way which lets you attach your Shield to your HDMI TV, link up an external gamepad, and stream PC games on the big screen – a little convoluted, we wager, but depending on your setup at home, it just might be useful.
