Samsung’s First Android Flip Smartphone Is Dual-screen

By Anton D. Nagy December 6, 2010, 10:42 am

The Samsung W899 is the Korean manufacturer's first dual-screen flip-phone running Android but before you get your hopes too high, it's for China Telecom only at the moment.

The handset has a clamshell form factor — rare among Samsung's smartphone designs — and features two 3.3-inch S-AMOLED WVGA displays powered by a 1GHz processor with the aid of 512MB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot, all on Android 2.2 Froyo. It does both GSM and CDMA standards and sports a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash plus a secondary front-facing VGA camera for video calls, aside from the usual suspects, WiFi / WAPI, Bluetooth and GPS.

POCKETNOW VIDEO OF THE DAY

Flipped open, the W899 reveals a standard numpad with a D-Pad (or trackpad) plus the additional dedicated Android buttons for Home, Back, Search and Menu. While a dual screen device is really attractive from the tech-lovers point of view, we wonder what the use of a secondary display is in this certain scenario where you can do the same things on both of the displays. Maybe it would have been more justified with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Regarding availability, there's no word yet on whether Samsung is planning this device for U.S. or Europe but we'd like to know how would you use it, in case it was available in your region.
