When it comes to the chips powering our smartphones and tablets, we’ve recently seen a shift in focus from raw clock speed, and even core count, to looking at efficient designs manufactured on finer and finer fabrication processes. This year, things have been shrinking down to around the 30 nanometer mark, with chips like the 32nm A5s Apple has been using in the latest iPad 2s, or the 28nm Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon. Samsung is looking to the future, and hopes to further secure its place as a processor manufacturer as it adopts 20nm and 14nm processes over the course of next year.

This move is part of a $1.9B investment the company is making in its fabrication operations. Right now, Samsung isn’t promising anything about how the ability to produce chips with this level of detail will affect existing product lines, but it’s not too hard to see that this is where the future of the Exynos line is headed.

Samsung is moving from Cortex-A9 to Cortex-A15-based designs with the Exynos 5 Dual. Both that and some Exynos 4 components use an existing 32nm process, already an improvement over the 45nm from previous-generation chips. Expecting a quick move to 14nm might be unrealistic, but if things go smoothly, we might hope to see 20nm Exynos processors arrive before 2014.
