Samsung launches LPDDR5X DRAM, might feature in Galaxy S22
Samsung claims LPDDR5X DRAM is 1.3x faster than LPDDR5
Samsung today introduced the next generation of LPDDR5 DRAM, the Low Power Double Data Rate 5X DRAM or LPDDR5X. The new LPDDR5X DRAM features 8.5Gbps transfer speed, which is 1.3x faster speed than LPDDR5's 6.4Gbps speed. LPDDR5X is built on the "industry’s first" 14-nanometer (nm). Thanks to the overall smaller dye, the new DRAM consumes 20% less power. Each LPDDR5X chip will have a capacity of 16Gb.
Samsung says it has designed the new chip for future applications. Samsung says the LPDDR5X will power technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and the metaverse. The company says that LPDDR5X RAM modules will be available in up to 64 gigabytes per memory package. Samsung says that it will collaborate with global chipset manufacturers and supply them with LPDDR5X chips by the end of 2021.
"Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles."
Now that Samsung has introduced LPDDR5X, there's a good chance that Samsung will introduce it with their flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 series. Samsung Galaxy S22 is tipped to be announced at Samsung's second Unpacked event of 2022, in February 2022. Samsung is the one that introduced LPDDR5 in 2019, and now the company is taking the industry forward with its LPDDR5X DRAM.
