Samsung Gear S2 Classic ‘New Edition’ launches in China ahead of global spread

Luxury smartwatch manufacturers are obviously competing for a very small piece of a slowly growing pie, so it probably shouldn’t come as a great surprise Samsung chose to merely plate its upscale Gear S2 variant with precious metals rather than make it all gold and platinum.

The Gear S2 Classic New Edition nonetheless “wowed the tech world by merging fashion with technology” at CES earlier this month, according to its not-so-modest designers, and is now fairly quickly going on sale in China, followed by markets “across the globe” in the next few weeks.

Oddly enough, we’re yet to receive formal confirmation on the retail cost front, even for Chinese shores, though you can clearly be sure of one important thing – Samsung’s golden Tizen timepiece will be much cheaper than the 18-karat Apple Watch Edition.

The latter starts at around $10,000, while the Samsung Gear S2 18K Rose Gold should go for the equivalent of $500 or so, at least on the old continent, based on early, unofficial pre-order info, rumors and, well, common sense.

Both the rose gold and platinum models will be sold with elegant, timeless genuine leather bands, painted in ivory and black respectively, all the specifications of the standard Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic naturally staying the same.

But with the non-luxury Android-compatible watch going as low as $200 through various third-party retailers, or even $0 when joined by an AT&T-locked Samsung phone, you have to wonder just how much fashion is worth.
