Samsung’s round-screened smartwatch gets a rumored name, new hardware details
For the past few months now we’ve been awaiting word of a new Samsung smartwatch, and to hear the rumors, this one could mark the manufacturer’s first attempt to craft such a wearable with a Moto-360-style circular display. The watch codenamed Orbis was once rumored to launch at MWC, but subsequent reports suggested it could still be half a year out. While there are still many questions about its launch to be addressed, today we check out a trove of new details about what to expect from Orbis, including a possible launch name and some specifics about the smartwatch’s connectivity.
Taking a page from the branding of the Gear S (above), Orbis may launch as the Samsung Gear A. Like the Gear S, the Gear A could also offer its own cellular connectivity – at least in one edition. This rumor claims that Samsung will be delivering two version of the Gear A: one that’s just Bluetooth and WiFi, and one that adds a cellular radio. We even get some possible model numbers for the two, expected as Samsung’s SM-R720 and SM-R730, respectively.
Variants of the cellular-enabled Gear A are rumored for all four big US carriers, meaning that availability could be quite widespread. What we don’t hear, though, is any update on a launch timeline, leaving us to wonder if those reports of a possible September introduction are still our best ETA.
