Samsung has unveiled its answer to the iPhone 5, the HTC One X, and every other high-end phone to be released this year. Shown at the Unpacked 2012 event in London, the Galaxy S III is an impressively-spec’ed smartphone. It has a Super AMOLED HD display at 4.8″ and 720p resolution. It’s powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos CPU with 1GB of RAM and either 16 or 32GB of storage. It has an 8MP camera on the rear with 1080p video recording, plus a 1.9MP front-facing camera. The design of the Galaxy S III is “inspired by nature” with a curved pebble-like feel and notification sounds that are supposed to be relaxing.

The battery is quite large at 2100mAh, and the Galaxy S III is a bit thicker than the S II, at 8.6mm. It’s powered by Android 4.0 with Samsung’s proprietary interface on top, though it’s not being referred to as TouchWiz.

There are a lot of impressive features included, such as the ability to keep the screen on when you are looking at the phone by tracking your eye movement. We wonder what impact this feature will have on battery life.

It also has a Siri-like voice control application called S-Voice that Samsung claims goes above and beyond even the most advanced voice control apps available. As an example, you can wake it up with a special phrase like “Hi Buddy” or “Hi Galaxy”.

There’s a feature called Direct Call, which uses motion recognition and the proximity sensor to make a call to the person you were texting with.

Then there is Smart Alert. This feature tries to figure out which calls and texts are the most important, and will alert you to a missed call or text from someone important.

The Galaxy S III has facial recognition so that when you take a photo, faces are automatically associated with your friends’ social network pages.

S-Beam is an extension of the Android Beam feature that lets you send data from one Android 4.0 phone to another. It utilizes WiFi Direct and NFC to allow two Galaxy S III’s to talk to one another without any setup. Samsung claims it’s the fastest way to transfer content.

The Galaxy S III will be available on both Pebble Blue and Marble White. Europe will get the Galaxy S III on May 29; look for the device in the USA this summer. No word on pricing.
