Samsung confirms smartphone with curved display for next month

Earlier this week, some old rumors came back in full force, suggesting that the multiple screen options we heard suggested for the Galaxy Note 3, including both LCD options and something using Samsung’s flexible OLED panel technology, could still be in the pipeline, and the latter might come out as soon as next month. What would that mean, though? Would this really be a flexible phone, or more of a traditional handset that used this new component to reduce size, weight, and add durability? That picture finally starts coming together, with a Samsung exec making a very clear statement about its plans.

While the Note 3 isn’t mentioned in particular, Samsung has now confirmed plans to introduce a smartphone featuring a curved display to its native South Korea next month.

That’s just the sort of conservative use of this tech that we’d expect to see introduce it, as designers start getting a feel for how to best take advantage of its properties. While there have been smartphones in the past with curved glass, we’ve yet to see any where the underlying display panel is itself curved.

This development does give us pause about that Note 3 theory – the phablet might be a little large to make a curved screen very useful – and maybe we’ll see a wholly independent model used to introduce this feature to the world.
