It was the first Windows Phone 8 device to officially break cover, but in a strange twist of circumstance, it’s turned out to be (presumably) the last major Windows Phone release of 2012. Coming in behind the HTC Windows Phones and Nokia’s Lumia family, we recently asked whether the ATIV S was still worth waiting for. That’s a question we won’t be able to answer in full until the completion of our review process, but that’s a procedure we can get started on right now. That’s because, thanks to the fine folks at Samsung, an ATIV S just showed up at our door.

Follow along with us as we unbox Samsung’s Windows Phone 8 superphone, packing a 4.8-inch HD SuperAMOLED display, a removable 2300-mAh battery, and MicroSDXC card slot, among other specs sure to make you salivate. We’ll give you an up-close look at the metallic hairline finish on the battery cover, tell you what the buttons feel like, and even power up that big 306ppi display for a quick blast of S-AMOLED goodness. Plus, we’ll tell you what the 135g device feels like in the hand.

There’s lots more to come in the days ahead, including comparisons and our full review. For now, click the video below and live vicariously through us as we get our first taste of the Samsung ATIV S.
