Samsung Prepping 720p Flexible Screen For CES Demo

This year has been chock-full of rumors about the arrival of smartphones featuring flexible display technology. Samsung’s found itself at the center of many of those, and after the Galaxy Note II landed without any such screen, rumors started looking instead to the Galaxy S IV. That’s still up for debate, though more recent rumors suggest the GS4 would have a regular, non-flexible display. Well, don’t get your hopes up for seeing any actual phones with this kind of screen at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, but we’ll still get a nice preview of the tech, upon word that Samsung has a new 720p flexible component it intends to demonstrate.

Back in 2011, Samsung was showing-off 4.5-inch flexible screens, but only in a WVGA resolution. Just like it has for standard screens, progress has brought higher resolutions and increased pixel densities to their flexible cousins, and at the 2013 CES Samsung intends to have a 5.5-inch 720p model for us to check out.

While the old one had a density of 207ppi, this new one bumps that up to 267ppi. Sure, that’s a long way off from what we’re seeing in 1080p components, but it should be a much-appreciated improvement should these screens ever get around to ending up in actual phones.
