Something real has seemingly appeared on the Nexus front. It is not like anything we’ve seen before, unless you count very vague appraisals and a generic slab non-Easter egg in a Google Photos ad that everyone (including us) thought it just might have been similar enough to something else.

That said, what else can manufacturers’ slab culture run besides… slabs?

Android Police has received some visuals on what Google’s Sailfish phone might look like and some strings between that device and the larger Marlin device. The Marlin will “share the same basic industrial design and materials” as the Sailfish — there’s no plastic involved in this process at all — and both phones are made by HTC. The two will only differ in specs for the battery, screen size and resolution.

As a reminder, the Sailfish device (S1, as it’s also known) has a 5-inch screen while the Marlin’s (M1) is 5.5 inches. The characteristic “glass third” of the back is detailed and the phone’s edges are tapered (though not chamfered).

To the point about the plastic, one Twitter leaker put out a picture of their own last night, showing of a potential 2016 Nexus phone in a rather obscured position. The leaker’s speculation seems to be based on what they were able to see and not much else, so tread cautiously with these words.

As the current leak compares, this leaker is only telling part of the story.

There’s obviously much more to work out as we close in on October, including some on-device branding subtleties and whatnot, but we’ll leave it to future renders and leaks to clear that up for us.

And, of course, no expectation ever beats the real thing.
