RIM Prepping To Build Cheaper BlackBerry To Fight Android?

Following maybe the footsteps of Apple — which is said to plan on producing a cheaper version of its smartphone — RIM is allegedly preparing to build cheaper BlackBerry handsets in order to fight back at Android and regain some market share.

Chip maker Marvell, one of Research in Motion’s main suppliers, has allegedly stated that “significant resources” are being shifted into “entry level smartphones”. RIM has lost a rather considerable chunk of its market share due to cheaper and more popular Android smartphones and is now coming in third after fell leader Symbian and Android. Building a cheaper BlackBerry would not only allow BlackBerry to compete with lower-budget Android smartphones but, with Nokia’s move towards Microsoft, it can also claim some cheap Symbian device users.
