Retro Boot Animation for Your Android

By Joe Levi May 3, 2010, 2:48 pm

Today I thought we'd take a break from "useful" tips that help make your life easier, and go with a neat little hack that will make your Nexus One, Droid, Liquid, or Milestone just a bit cooler than your friend's Android.

What does it do? It replaces your stock boot animation with a retro-style BIOS animation, which makes your Android look like it's a full-fledged computer (which it basically is).

Does this hack give you any extra capabilities? No. Does it add any features or benefits? No. What it does do is increases the geeky coolness factor of your phone during boot time.

First off, you'll need to have an unlocked phone, and using a custom Recovery ROM will make applying the hack easier. This hack involves flashing a file to your device via abd or through your Recovery ROM. ADB instructions are given in the XDA thread.

To flash using the Recovery method:

  1. copy the .zip to the root of your sdcard
  2. boot your phone into Recovery Mode (how to do this will vary depending on which phone you're using; on the Nexus One, hold volume-down while booting)
  3. select Recovery
  4. then if using RA's recovery rom select "Flash any Zip from SD"
  5. confirm that you want to flash the Zip by pressing the scroll button
  6. Reboot

What do you think? Will this impress your friends? What other boot animations would you like to see?

(Hat tip to frysee at XDA-Developers.com for this cool hack!)
