Motorola rounded-out last week with a tease of what was to come: red leather. The company tweeted that it had “a little something in the works,” but left us to guess just what that would be: a new Moto X material option? Maybe a new band for the Moto 360? Either seemed like a valid possibility, but we didn’t have anything more to go on at the time. We were all ready to find ourselves waiting for another week or two before Motorola revealed whatever it had in store, but it turns out we only had a couple days to go, and today Motorola welcomes red leather to its Moto Maker options for the Moto X.

That’s right: red leather is just for the Moto X at the moment, with no corresponding new option for the Moto 360’s bands. That said, a new leather back is a new leather back, and unlike the football leather selection that came to Moto Maker last fall, this time the new material isn’t exclusive to any one carrier.

Like the other Moto X leather options, the new red shade is provided by Horween and comes at a $25 premium over the phone’s plastic backs (just like the premium wood backs). Anyone dreaming of putting together a custom Moto X design featuring this new back?
