Pocketnow Dream Phones: Jaime

Pocketnow Dream Phones is a new series where Pocketnow.com editors get to work with a professional artist to design our own dream phones. You’ve seen the PN1 and the PN2, now take a look at the PN3!

Before we go into any details, let me start by letting you in on where I stand. I carry two phones, one a BlackBerry Bold, and another, an iPhone 4. One is a messaging workhorse, and the other a multi-media powerhouse. If you would try to bring their strengths into just one device under all the current design form factors in the market, it would either be too bulky and ugly to carry, or too inefficient to pull you through the day. I later saw this video of Microsoft’s vision of the future, and began to drool over the idea of one device that could transform into other form factors.

Form Factor

I’ve used all the existing form factors in the market. From no keyboard to sliding QWERTYs to front facing QWERTYs to SureType. Screens were either too small, uncomfortable, or the interface was just too lame to make software alone reliable. After using an iPad for a couple of weeks, I’ve been left with an urge for more screen than any smartphone can offer comfortably. My idea of a solution would be a device with two screens.

PN3 2

That’s right, two screens. You’d probably say that my dreams are already close to becoming a reality, but the PN3 goes far beyond the current offering. You can choose to use it as a slate device and take advantage of its 4.7 inch, capacitive exterior touch screen for those moments where mobility is key. For hardcore messaging, just slide out the interior screen that carries the same specs as the exterior one to reveal a landscape keyboard. Since both screens go from edge-to-edge, those times where you want to read a book, browse the web or watch a movie, just slide the screen further and snap both screens into one gigantic multi-media machine.

PN3 3

Call it an elegant tablet replacement if you may. I’m one of those guys that likes to travel light, and that strives to find one device that can fit all needs. Not that I’d be happy with doing away with hardware keyboards, but the advantage of two screens is giving the device all the versatility to transform into different devices depending on your needs and circumstances.

Powering two Retina Display resolution screens requires juice. The PN3 would rock the latest dual core processor of its time, which I’d mark at no less than 1.5 GHz. 1 GB of RAM, 1 GB of ROM and 64 GB of persistent storage to make performance the least of your worries. You’d have a 12 Megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 1080p video recording capabilities at 30 fps partnered by a front facing 3 Megapixel camera for video chats and calls. It would be a 4G LTE device with Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth, HDMI out, and all the rest of the cake topping.

Operating System

Let’s call this baby iDroid. I’m a big fan of Android’s extended features, widgets and just about everything except its lack of polish. I’d consider iOS to be king in UI elegance, but we all know the iconic home screen UI is dated. Try mixing both of their strengths together, and I’d say we’d have a winner. If you’ve ever Jailbroken your iPhone and added cool Cydia apps like Lockinfo, then you know what I’m looking for in my dream OS.

The Bottom Line

History has proven that one size doesn’t fit all. Some of you may dream with features others of us would rather live without for the sake of portability. I usually stand in the line of “less is always more” unless you really know how to pull “more” off. I’d say the PN3 is elegant enough to appeal to those in need of a “pocketable” device that is already fit to evolve into bigger and better things as your hard day at work unfolds.

What’s your dream phone like?
