OnePlus One sales open for good (but invites will return for the sequel)

Last Friday, OnePlus invited the world to turn its attention on the company today, Monday,  April 20, with the understanding that big news was on its way. Was new hardware ready to make its debut? Could we be seeing the launch of the OnePlus 2 already? As it turns out, we’re not getting any new device at all, but that doesn’t mean that OnePlus doesn’t still have a milestone of an announcement to share with us. Today it gets ready to mark the one-year anniversary of the OnePlus One launch by finally getting rid of its convoluted ordering system for the phone, fully opening OnePlus One orders permanently.

That means no more invites, no more once-a-week order windows: from here on out, you want a OnePlus One and you order it – no jumping through hoops.

While that news is great to hear, there’s also some less than stellar news buried within this announcement: OnePlus confirms that invites will be coming back for the OnePlus 2. That’s a big upset for any of the company’s supporters who were holding out hope that it might have learned enough over the course of the past year to do round two a little differently. At least there’s a ray of hope to be found, as OnePlus says that the OnePlus 2 will “initially” have invites – so there’s the potential for them to go away for that model, too, just like they are for the first-gen device today.
