OnePlus One is being sold “at cost” according to CEO

The last thing we could ever call the OnePlus One is cheap. This is a smartphone that’s so affordable, that many of us have dubbed it as “too good to be true” because of its specifications, and also because it is very well designed. You’d assume that there is a special secret behind how this company is able to sell you this smartphone with some flagship specs and at a significantly smaller price that its competitors, and we get official information as to why.

OnePlus CEO Peter Lau was recently interviewed and used this to confess the reasons why the company has managed to price its One smartphone so aggressively. According to Lau, the company is currently selling the device “at cost”. His statement also mentioned that “We are able to do that by redistributing our costs to better benefit the user.” Another part of the company’s strategy is not investing on traditional marketing means, as Lau mentioned that Samsung and Apple do, but instead focusing on marketing on line, and selling online as well.

Obviously at the moment the OnePlus One is still a device that has a lot to prove. It’s initial sales plan has been quite controversial, and it’s clear that unless the company figures that out, it might not make the dent that the market is in need of getting.
